Have you ever in your lifetime has wondered about any name of the place? Well, I was! Through this blog, I wish to share some tourism aspects of two islands that are located in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. We know that Andaman and Nicobar islands are really an interesting tourist destination to explore. For people like me living in these busy metropolitan city, needs refreshment. If these islands were present in our city, then it would have benefited the people to a greater extent. Since my marriage is fixed, I decided that we would go for a honeymoon in Andaman and would obviously visit Guitar and Interview islands. The moment we hear the name as Guitar Island, what comes first into our minds is that the island is associated with a musical performance or something. Obviously, here a musician can have best moments be it a lyricist, musician, or a singer the solitude will invoke artistic talents. But the reason for calling it is not related to any musical aspects but the aerial view the island offers. When we see the aerial view of the island, it looks like a guitar. Before visiting itself, the name of this island invokes a curiosity in the minds of people. There is not much investigation required to know its etymology. Simply, the island is owned by Interview group, thus the island has got its name. Lying in the Northern part of middle Andaman’s, the interview islands are closer to Mayabunder. The highest part of this island is a wooded plateau. The reason why most of the tourists omit this place while they are on their tour is that the long travel one needs to undergo. It will take almost 7 hours to reach Mayabunder and from there 3 hours to reach the island. Also, a night stay is not allowed on the island and is a one-day package. But I am planning my tour as to reach Mayabunder first a day before and by staying there overnight, catching the boat ride on the next day. The boat ride is on a dongi, a wooden traditional boat and the cruise will be along thick mangroves. What we want more for a thrill? On reaching there the first look seems wild mostly because the north-west part has proof of wreckage by monsoon storms.

Interview Island is lying 125 kilometers away from Port Blair and is a prominent wildlife sanctuary. It is the largest island sanctuary of Andaman and Nicobar islands, housing rare varieties of flora and fauna. The Government has taken steps to protect the elephants as well as animals inside the sanctuary. These feral elephants are an important attraction here. Actually, the sanctuary was built to protect these animals. Apart from elephants, there are other creatures also, like Andaman wild pig, common palm civet, spotted deer etc. Many varieties of birds are found nesting in the trees of the Interview islands. The island is opened throughout the year and the climate is close to tropical in nature. The summers are too hot and monsoons are long. There is no winter in the island. The Great Andamanese are people with good skill and artistic knowledge, they make their own ornaments with tools both modern and ancient style. Most of the ornaments they make are made up of leaves, barks, and shells which are worn during the traditional dance and festivals. The tribe has their own practice and tradition of medical treatment in which they pierce the body with a piece of glass in a belief that the bad and impure blood is drained using this method which would reduce the pain. The younger generation of the tribe goes to schools and some of the members of the tribe are given government job within the island.

Jarawa tribe: These were the most feared tribe among all the settlements. They are short dark people who are skilled in making tools of a different kind. The people have least or no connection with the Andamanese, the life in a reserved and conserved area in the middle Andaman. These people are fond of red colored clothes bust most of them are found nude in their reserved areas. They are people with great hostile nature and use mostly poisonous arrows as their weapon. In olden days there were reports of people in villages being killed with the poisoned arrows of the tribe. Entry to the area is forbidden in their land so as to maintain peace. Contact with the tribe or photography in the tribal area is forbidden with the police in Andaman setting up strict rules and monitoring process to protect travelers who pass through the reserved area.

Onge settlement: The Onge belongs to the Negrito settlement to the little Andaman. the tradition of the tribe that when the men go out hunting the women of the tribe stay at home and search for roots and tubers beneath the soil. They were people with a very little interest in cultivation or farming as they were unaware of the agriculture until they came in contact with the modern world. Few years before they did not believe in boiling food as they were unaware of the process of cooking. They used bow and arrow for fishing along the shallow coast of the sea. The local sweet of the tribe is honey which they collect freshly from the bee hives in the trees and forests; they used herbal leaves to avoid the bee from stinging them while collecting honey.

Shompen settlement: They are people who live in the interior of the Andaman Islands. They were feared and hostile during the early days but now there are no reports of hostility by the tribe, more over they have started establishing a trade relation with Nicobarese. The main mode of living in the tribe is by the mode of fishing, hunting, and gathering of foods from the forest and other parts of their settlement. The people of the tribe by nature are wanderers and travel from one place to another and live in self-made tents. They are shy in nature and thus avoid contact with the people outside their tribe. The government of Andaman provides the people with free food, water, utensils and medical facilities. It is said that the male of the tribe often visit the bay to trade products like honey and to get their ration. They are people who stay happy in isolation.

Sentinelese: They are Negroid people who live in the small North Sentinel Island. The tribal people due to their strict isolation from the outside world are the only known tribe which is still in isolation in the world. Not much about the tribe is known as they are very hostile to the outsiders and do not permit the entry of anyone outside the tribe. The tribal people use self-made bow and arrow that they mostly use for fishing and hunting wild pigs. The tribes in the settlement use no covering.
